"The Awakening"

The third season begins with Aang aboard a Fire Nation ship with the gang, Bato and Hakoda all in Fire Nation disguises. Aang finds out what has been occurring and is told to act dead (not be seen with his arrow) until the eclipse. Meanwhile, Zuko and Azula return home to be greeted by Ozai.

"The Avatar State"
After leaving the North Pole, Aang and the group travel to an Earth Kingdom military base to receive an escort to Omashu, so Aang can learn Earthbending from King Bumi. The general there reveals a surprising plan, suggesting that Aang trigger the Avatar State to defeat the Fire Lord immediately. Meanwhile, Zuko's sister Azula says that the Fire Lord will pardon both him and Iroh if they return home with her.

Song, a young and compassionate healer, shows Zuko the effects of war from a normal citizen's perspective.

"Return to Omashu"
Aang and the crew are shocked to find Omashu captured by the Fire Nation. They sneak in and are caught by Fire Nation soldiers, but released when pox marks on Sokka create the illusion of an illness. They then meet the resistance and allow the whole city to escape by creating a fake epidemic with the same pox marks. While they are leaving, the Governor of Omashu's son, TomTom, accidentally leaves with the Earthbenders who are willing to trade him for King Bumi.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

In each generation, only one Bender is solely capable of controlling all four elements. That Bender is the Avatar. The Avatar is the spirit of the world manifests in human form. Then, the Firebenders attacked. Just as the world needed the Avatar the most, he mysteriously vanished. A hundred years later, the Fire Nation is near final victory in its ruthless war of world domination. The Air Nomads were destroyed, the Air Temples ravished, and all Airbender monks eradicated. The Water Tribes were raided and driven to the brink of extinction. The Earth Kingdom remains and fights a hopeless war against the Fire Nation. Many believe the Avatar was never reborn into the Air Nomads and the cycle is broken.

In the desolated South Pole, a lone Water tribe struggles to survive. It is here that the village's last remaining Waterbender Katara and her warrior brother Sokka rescue a strange 12-year-old boy named Aang who has been suspended in hibernation in an iceberg. The tribe soon discovers that Aang is not only an Airbender--the extinct race no one has seen in a century--but also the long lost Avatar. Admiral Zhao was a hot-tempered Fire Nation admiral in pursuit of the Avatar and Zuko's principal rival throughout Book One. He was killed by the Ocean Spirit after he killed the Moon Spirit and tried to cripple the Northern Water Tribe.

Zhao is a hot tempered Fire Bender who wants to capture Aang to further his ranks in the Fire Bending army. He is a Commander when we first see him but is later made an Admiral. He duels Prince Zuko and loses and Zuko refuses to burn him as his father did, as is proper to do to the loser of a duel. In anger of his defeat Zhao tries to attack Zuko when he's walking away. Iroh stops him and comments on his disgraceful actions in defeat.

It is unknown, but it is hinted that Zhao died during the fight at the Northern Water Tribes after he killed the kA that was the physical body of the moon spirit.

Zhao has no control over his anger or his own bending skills. When he is angry, the first thing he will do is set it on fire or blow it up. When Aang was learning fire bending, Zhao shows up; Aang uses Zhao's temper as a weapon and by jumping around and getting him angry, Aang manages to have Zhao set fire to all of his own boats!

Avatar Roku was the Avatar before Aang, who was born to the Fire Nation. Throughout the series, Avatar Roku appears as a spiritual advisor to help Aang fulfill his duties as the Avatar.

Avatar Roku was the avatar before Aang was, and is a Fire Bender. He died many years ago, being betrayed by Fire Lord Sozin, with whom he was best friends. He appears to help Aang through his quest to learn all the elements and give him information when it's needed. He tells Aang of the dangers and positives of the Avatar State; that while an Avatar is at his or her most powerful, they are also at their most vulnerable, and that if they die in the Avatar State the cycle of reincarnation will stop and another Avatar will never be born.

When Avatar Roku was living in Fire Nation, he was friends with Prince Sozin (who later became Fire Lord Sozin, the guy who stared war). On their birthday (Roku's 14th and Sozin's 15th, as they were both born on the same day just one year apart), Roku learned from Fire Sages that he was the avatar! On the day he left for his training, Sozin gave something that belongs only to a crowned prince.

When Roku came to the Air Nation to learn airbending, he meets a young Monk Gyatso. Later, he went to learn Waterbending, and had a hard time learning Waterbending, though when he moved on to learn Earthbending, he found this to be fairly easy.

While he is a Fire Bender, his personality shows that not all Fire benders are cruel.

Prince Zuko is the great-grandson of Avatar Roku... as his mother is the granddaughter of Avatar Roku.

Originally, he was not going to become the Fire Lord. Instead, his brother, Iroh, was about to become Fire Lord, but since Iroh's only son died in battle, Ozai inherited the title instead.

Afterwards, he returns home (somehow). He does not make an appearance in the second season, except when he appears in one of Zuko's flashbacks, asking an old man, Zuko's grandfather, who was in that time the fire lord Azulon, to grant him power instead. Also, he had Azula go to the Fire Nation occupied Earth kingdoms to try and trick Zuko and Iroh into coming home, although the plan was foiled when a captain said "Load the prisoners!" This ruined the whole plot, and Zuko, along with Iroh, fled deep into the Earth kingdoms.

Later, he decided to start a new life in Ba Sing Se. Jet was brainwashed by Long Feng in his base under Lake Laogai. He is later killed when fatally wounded by a pillar of rock shot by Long Feng. Jet used Twin Tiger-Head hook swords as his weapons.

Jet is the teenage orphan who is the leader of a band of Earth Kingdom children called "The Freedom Fighters". Jet holds a deep grudge against the Fire Nation for killing his parents when he was eight. He and his "Freedom Fighters" spend their days messing with the Fire Nation soldiers and emigrants on the outskirts of their forest, living in forest tree houses.

He uses Twin Tiger-Head Hook Swords. When Katara met him, she became attracted with the charismatic rogue, but quickly forgot these feelings after Sokka discovered and thwarted Jet's plans to use captured blasting jelly to destroy a dam and flood a Fire Nation settlement and kill the soldiers and innocent civilians living there. In anger, she freezes him to a tree, then leaves.

In Book 2, Chapter 17, Jet is killed by the king at Ba Sing Se.

Momo is an intelligent and curious Winged Lemur who travels around the world with the group. Momo also loves to eat, and will eat as much as possible when a lot of food is available. He has a tendency to dislike other flying creatures of his size and often picks fights with them. Momo mainly serves as comic relief for the show, but has often played an important role in the plot.

Momo was first found by Aang, Katara and Sokka at the Southern Air Temple when Aang returned after being in the ice for so many years. At first Sokka wanted to make him a meal since he was hungry. But Sokka changed his mind after Momo brought him some fruit.

Momo's kind used to fly around the Temple. Now, because of the attack, Momo was the last Flying Lemur left. Momo is able to fly by using large folds of skin hidden on his arms as wings. He has very good hearing and sense of smell and is very fast.

Momo can act a little silly most of the time, adding comic relief to the show. However, he is smarter than he looks and acts.

Momo means "Peach" in Japanese, and that was what Momo was eating then Aang named him.

Momo is the flying lemur who Aang, Katara, and Sokka find in Aang's old home, the Southern Air temple.

As all of the Avatar before him, Aang must have a sprit guide to help him in his journey as the Avatar. And this is Momo.

At first he is a little pain in the rump who steals all of Sokka's food and leads Aang on a wild chase to the bodies of the Air-Masters who raised him. Sokka dislikes him, but they achieve a truce-of sorts later in the series.

Aang and Appa's first meeting is seen during a flashback sequence in Appa's Lost Days. It is tradition with Air Nomads that each young Airbender is given a flying bison calf once they come of age to be the Airbender's life-long animal companion. Almost immediately, the two became friends and would remain close, Appa being the one thing from Aang's home that Aang took with him when he fled the Southern Air Temple.

Appa remained in suspended animation along with Aang for 100 years until their discovery by Katara and Sokka. Since then, Appa has been the group's main form of transportation in their quest, as well as occasionally assisting in battle. In "The Library" Appa was a consistent part of the group throughout the series until his capture by the Sandbenders. However, Appa has been returned to group as of the Season 2 episode Lake Laogai.

Lost Days

Appa became lost for a short while when the group was traveling in the Earth Kingdom. He was kidnapped by Sandbenders in the middle of the vast Si Wong desert, while Aang, Katara, Sokka, and their winged lemur Momo were trapped in a vast underground library. It is later revealed that he was eventually sold to a Fire Nation circus where an animal tamer attempted to make him part of the show. Appa later escaped and journeyed throughout the Earth Kingdom until he encountered the Kyoshi Island Warriors, who attempted to heal the various wounds he had sustained in his travels and escort him back to Aang. Appa was forced to leave after an attack by Azula and her allies, ushered away by Suki while the warriors tried to delay the three Fire Nation women. On his journey he encountered a sadhu named Guru Pathik at the Eastern Air Temple, to which he had fled. Being healed of his personal turmoil and directed to Aang by the sadhu, Appa flew to Ba Sing Se, where he was captured by Long Feng.

Appa was kept in a secret location at Lake Laogai until his rescue by Zuko, who was initially planning on utilizing him to capture the Avatar. Appa eventually returns to the main group in the last scenes of Lake Laogai.

Journey into the Fire Nation

Appa still accompanies Aang and his group even after they enter the Fire Nation. However, in order to make sure that he does not give away Aang's identity when flying, Aang covers Appa with clouds as a disguise while in flight.

At the Western Air Temple, he was among the first members of the group to accept Zuko as Aang's firebending teacher, as he is still grateful for Zuko freeing him in Ba Sing Se.[10] He flew Aang and Zuko to the Sun Warrior Temple in order to learn the origin of firebending. He also flew Zuko and Katara to the Southern Raiders ship, so Katara could confront the murderer of her mother.

After the search for Aang in the finale failed, the group was forced to divide their efforts to prevent the Fire Nation from wiping out the Earth Kingdom. Appa flew Zuko and Katara to the Fire Nation capital where they fought and defeated Azula before she could assume leadership of the throne. Afterward, Appa is last seen outside of Iroh's tea shop in Ba Sing Se, listening to Iroh play a horn.

Personality

Appa has been shown to be afraid of fire and trusting of those who have been kind to him. He can become quite temperamental towards anyone who he thinks is a threat to himself or his friends, especially Aang. Conversely, he has demonstrated an unrestrained affection towards those that he likes, often licking anyone he deems a friend. Appa also has a fear of going underground or in small tunnels, evidenced by his claustrophobic panic in "The Cave of Two Lovers". He has a special friendship with Momo the lemur, with whom he is often in company.

Abilities

Appa possesses the ability to fly, hence the name Sky Bison. He utilizes his Airbending for this purpose; his tail appears to be the main driving force behind his bending but has shown to also be able to accomplish it with his mouth. Due to his size and mass, it takes a lot of energy for him to stay aloft. As a result, Appa cannot fly for an extended time and periodically requires stopping and resting. He has also shown to be a fairly adept swimmer as well, although he is more frequently seen flying or walking than swimming. Despite the tranquility related to his personality as well as his species, Appa has shown himself to be very capable of fighting when necessary. With his bending, Appa can create powerful gusts of air with just a flick of his tail and can gain advantage over his opponent by hovering. Being a bison, he is also naturally capable of brute strength and endurance. The best demonstration of this was in "Bato of the Water Tribe" where he endured multiple strikes from a Shirshu tongue before finally succumbing to the paralyzing venom, and "Appa's Lost Days" where he fought a rather large boarcupine, and was impaled by many painful quills. During larger battles, Appa serves as a mount for Aang. Appa and Aang are usually integral in large conflicts because their enemies rarely had effective counters to Appa's strength and maneuverability in the air. Only in the "Day of the Black Sun" was Appa's air supremacy truly challenged. During that episode, Sokka outfitted Appa with battle armor, serving to make Appa an even stronger force to be reckoned with.

Iroh is a retired Fire Nation general and Prince Zuko's uncle. Iroh is the older brother of Fire Lord Ozai and was the original heir to the throne of the Fire Nation. A powerful Firebender of great renown and respect (he is known as the Dragon of the West), he looks upon Zuko as a son more than as a nephew, especially after the loss of his own son, Lu Ten. On the surface, Iroh is a cheerful and kind old man whose hobbies include drinking tea, playing Pai Sho, and singing. But inside he is a very determined individual who would do anything to protect those he cares about. So far he is the only one shown to know about Zuko's ancestry and destiny. Much older and more experienced than any of the other main characters, Iroh chooses to take a less active role in the affairs of the series, acting as more of a mentor and guide to Zuko and most everyone he meets, including Aang and company.

The show itself is divided into three seasons. The producers of the show have named each season as a "book". When the show opened, Iroh is shown accompanying Zuko on his journey. It is revealed that the pair spent two years at sea, searching in vain for any sign of the Avatar, who is the spirit of the planet manifested in human form. Near the end of the first episode of the show, a strange beacon lit the skies off the coast of the South Pole. When this is investigated, Zuko discovers that the Avatar has reappeared. Zuko and Iroh quickly engage in hot pursuit, tracking the Avatar and his friends across the globe. In order to get Zuko to the Northern Water Tribe in the end of season 1, Iroh hides Zuko aboard Admiral Zhao's ship and serves as Zhao's chief adviser for his invasion of the North. When Admiral Zhao's plan threatens the spiritual balance, Iroh attacks Zhao and later is labeled a traitor and blamed for the failure of the invasion.

At the beginning of Season Two, Iroh and Zuko have been branded traitors to the Fire Nation. They later take refuge in Earth Kingdom towns, acting as homeless beggars. Iroh decides to teach Zuko the advanced Firebending techniques he would need to defeat Princess Azula, who is sent to capture him and the Avatar. Iroh teaches Zuko a technique of his own creation—to absorb and redirect lightning, which he developed after studying Waterbenders. Iroh and Zuko eventually reach Ba Sing Se, where they soon begin a very prosperous life running a tea house. Iroh eventually convinces Zuko to stop his search for the Avatar, though this does not last. Azula arrives in Ba Sing Se and convinces Zuko to help her conquer the city and defeat the Avatar and Katara in order for him to regain his honor and his father's love. Iroh defends the wounded Avatar and Katara after Zuko had betrayed him, later to be imprisoned by Azula's new allies, the Dai Li, for his actions.

In season three, Iroh has been imprisoned for his actions defending the Avatar. While in prison, he refuses to talk to Zuko until eventually telling him he is descended from Avatar Roku, exercises to become very muscular, and finally escapes during a solar eclipse. In the series finale, he is revealed to have reunited with his fellow members of the White Lotus and he is located by Zuko and the others. Iroh forgives Zuko and declines his birthright to the Fire Nation's throne after Zuko tells Iroh his intention for defeating Azula. Here, Iroh states his wish to return to his tea shop. He later plays the role of liberating Ba Sing Se from Fire Nation control. He is later seen with the rest of the cast, relaxing at his new tea shop.

Personality

Easygoing, friendly, and dryly good-humored, Iroh treats his self-imposed exile of the first part of the series as though it were an extended vacation. Something of a hedonist in his old age, he focuses more on the pursuits of relaxation and amusements than on the pursuit of the Avatar, clashing with the dedication of his nephew. However, beneath the easy going exterior lies a wise man experienced in the ways of the world, a seasoned and wily strategist,and a powerful Firebending master.

Iroh is particularly fond of food, good tea, the strategy game Pai Sho, and pleasant music. He later displays skill at playing the pipa, singing lullabies to pacify a crying child. Most likely because of his love of tea, he has shown himself to be an amateur botanist with knowledge of a wide variety of plants, though misinterpretation of some plant characteristics lead him to accidentally poisoning himself.

He also demonstrates a respect and appreciation for all cultures, which seems to be a rarity among those of the Fire Nation. This partially stems from his trip into the spirit world, which left him with a certain spiritual awareness. He also tends to act as a mentor to everyone he meets, including the Avatar and his friends. In his respect, he is something of a father-figure to Prince Zuko and cares deeply for him, to the point of willingly following his nephew into a self-imposed exile. In Tales of Ba Sing Se, it is suggested that his perpetual optimism and generosity are a form of post-traumatic growth resulting from the death of his son.

Despite his age, Iroh is seen flirting with various older women throughout the series, and has been addressed as "handsome" on multiple occasions.

Veteran

It is revealed that in his younger days, Iroh was a great general and war hero,once known among his enemies as the "Dragon of the West" because he supposedly slew the last two dragons in the world, as well as his particular aptitude for breathing fire during combat. It is revealed in "The Firebending Masters" that he did not kill these dragons, but pretended to do so in order to hide and protect them. It should also be noted that Firebenders that have defeated dragons are given the honorary title "Dragon". Though Iroh still commands a great deal of respect, he fell from grace when after six hundred days of siege he failed to conquer Ba Sing Se. Iroh gave up the assault when his son and only child, Lu Ten, was killed. While many, including Ozai, viewed this failure as a disgrace,Iroh believed he did the right thing and later claimed that he and his men were tired after the long siege.As a result of his long service in the military, Iroh knows many of the Fire Nation soldiers personally, although many are now enemies due to his being branded a traitor to the Fire Nation.

In addition to his extensive military service, Iroh has endured other trials, the hardest and most painful being his beloved son's death, and a journey to the Spirit World, which has left him with respect for the other world and the ability to see spirits.The nature and events surrounding his journey to the Spirit World has yet to be revealed. At one point in his life, he also encountered the last surviving dragons in the world, who judged him and deemed him worthy to know the true nature of Firebending. In order to protect them, he lied and fabricated a story about him having actually slain the last dragon, thus stopping any further hunts from being conducted. Near the finale, he is addressed again by his former title of "General".

Abilities

Iroh is a renowned and powerful Firebender in the Avatar world. A wise old man who exercises 'neutral jing', Iroh's style of Firebending tends to be less aggressive than others. Iroh has a tendency to not involve himself in battle, but when he does partake in them, he displays great skill. He has a famous "Breath of Fire", which resembles a dragon breathing flames on its opponent.

Iroh stands as one of the select few Firebenders the show has revealed who possess the ability to generate lightning. Most notably, he is also the inventor of a unique technique involving the absorption and redirection of lightning. Iroh developed the technique by observing Waterbenders, who use their fluid movements to redirect attacks. Thus far, he, his nephew Zuko, and Avatar Aang are the only ones to show this ability, although Firelord Sozin possessed a similar ability to redirect heat.

Recently Iroh used time in prison to secretly improve himself in a more physical manner, although the exact level of fitness that he has reached is unclear. It is here implied that his large, ungainly stomach is at least partly a ruse created by placing a pillow under his robe. After his escape (off screen) the bars of his cell are seen to be bent and the tied up warden informs Zuko that his uncle was "like a one-man army". Due to Sozin's Comet, Iroh finally realized his dream to take Ba Sing Se, albeit in the name of the Earth Kingdom.

As a firebending prodigy with a sadistic personality, Azula is a dangerous Bender. She and Iroh are the only two Firebenders shown who can bend and produce lightning, but Azula is the only one shown who can produce blue fire, which is much hotter than an orange flame. She sees others as expendable, and intimidates her lackeys and all those under her command. Even though she is quite successful at hiding it, she is hurt that her mother always liked Zuko better.

Azula first appears in a flashback displaying Iroh's story about the Agni Kai in which Prince Zuko receives his facial scar and sentence of exile. Fans immediately began speculating upon who the girl standing next to Iroh might have been. Azula is not shown again until the end of the season, after the siege of the Northern Water Tribe, at which point Ozai orders Azula to arrest Zuko and Iroh for failure to capture the Avatar and betrayal of the Fire Nation, respectively

Although Azula's age is never stated in the series itself, the Avatar website gives her age at the time of her first appearance as fourteen. She is the great-granddaughter of both Fire Lord Sozin, through Ozai, and Avatar Roku, through Ursa.

In another flashback, it is revealed that she is named after her grandfather, Ozai's father Azulon, and that she and Azulon are both firebending prodigies. Even when she was a child, Azula demonstrated her natural talents early in life, along with her tendency for malice and perfectionism. Her sharp wit and the skill she displayed towards Firebending gained her much attention and acclaim. Her father showed her obvious favoritism, often at Zuko's expense.

Azula is depicted as interested in power from a very young age. She is shown destroying a doll that her uncle had sent her and young Zuko mentions that she throws rocks at the tame turtle-ducks that live in their garden pond. Young Azula suggests that her father would make a far better Fire Lord than the heir apparent, her uncle, Iroh, whom she also dubbed "a quitter and a loser" for abandoning his siege at Ba Sing Se after the death of his son and only child, Lu Ten. Years later, when her brother is burned by their father during an Agni Kai duel, she is shown watching triumphantly.

After Iroh and Zuko's betrayal at the north pole, Ozai tasks Azula with capturing the two of them. While Zuko initially believes that Azula is here to escort Zuko home, it later becomes apparent that Azula is only there to capture them. Zuko and Iroh escape from Azula and are wanted by both the Earth Kingdom and the Fire Nation. Azula eventually encounters the Avatar in Omashu, wherein she and Aang battle. Soon after, she names the Avatar as a personal target in addition to her brother and enlists the help of her friends Ty Lee and Mai. Azula continues to pursue the Avatar, Zuko, and Iroh for the rest of the season, becoming the main antagonist as Zuko had been during the previous season. After initially failing to gain entry to Ba Sing Se, Azula comes in contact with the Kyoshi Warriors and defeats them. Using the disguises of the Kyoshi Warriors, Azula, Ty Lee, and Mai enter Ba Sing Se and she arranges to meet with the security agents known as the Dai Li (who were being overthrown at the time), with whom she overthrows the Earth Kingdom. Azula captures Zuko in Ba Sing Se and convinces him to join her and defeat the Avatar in order for Zuko to get his birthright back. During their showdown in the catacombs, Azula appears to have mortally wounded Aang while he is in the Avatar State with a lighting bolt. It is assumed that the Avatar State has now become broken, and Aang is later shown explaining that his seventh chakra is now "locked". Azula suspects that Aang survived and eventually blames this on her brother.

Upon her return home in the third season, it is revealed that Azula has not taken credit for the murder of the Avatar, but has given it to Zuko, hinting that his honor would suffer if Aang's survival were known. This could lead many fans to believe that Azula planned to steal the throne from Zuko all along, as hinted at during a prophetic dream that Zuko has in Ba Sing Se, wherein Azula was depicted as a blue dragon.

During "The Day of Black Sun," Azula serves as a distraction to keep Aang, Sokka, and Toph from finding Fire Lord Ozai, assisted by Dai Li agents. Later, Azula accompanies Mai and Ty Lee to the Boiling Rock, where Zuko has been captured, but Zuko, Sokka, Suki, and Hakoda escape. During the escape, Mai attacks the guards allowing them to escape. Azula's calm breaks, and in a fury, she attempts to attack Mai, but is stopped by Ty Lee. After having Mai and Ty Lee locked away, a crazed Azula leads a platoon to the Western Air Temple. There she duels with Zuko until they are both thrown from the airship. She survives by propelling herself to safety. This could arguably signify the beginning of her descent into madness.

n the finale, Ozai, after declaring himself the Phoenix King, names Azula as the new Fire Lord, but says that she must remain in the Fire Nation to lead the people while he is gone. Azula's sanity begins to deteriorate, which leads her to banishing nearly all of her servants. When she is about to be crowned, Katara and Zuko arrive, whereupon she challenges Zuko to an Agni Kai. Zuko accepts the offer and later gains the upper hand, whereupon Azula attempts to distract him by attacking Katara. Zuko saves Katara at the cost of his own safety; immediately thereafter, Katara fights for her own life and ultimately captures Azula. After Katara healed Zuko's injuries, Azula finally lost it and began screaming, crying and breathing fire out of her mouth uncontrollably while Zuko and Katara looked on as Azula's sanity deteriorated completely.

Personality

cruel, ruthless firebender and to manipulate people by controlling them through fear. She is a dedicated nationalist, relentlessly drilling herself towards perfection and will settle for nothing less.Even as a child she was seen to react with hostility when outdone. In a flashback, a young Azula is shown pushing Ty Lee over after Ty Lee beats her at cartwheeling. She is rather vain and believes that power and domination are what makes a person strong. She is known for being one of the cruelest characters in the series. From a young age, Azula demonstrated sadistic aggression and lack of remorse.She lacks empathy, treats people as expendable, and seems unable to view them as her equals. Her cruelty and seemingly total lack of compassion extends to many born into her family. Her amorality also accounts for her ability to create and direct lightning, as the skill requires peace of mind.

Ironically, for all her refinement and self-confidence, Azula does retain some insecurities. Although she is shown as a good strategist and capable of predicting what her enemies will do, she has a disadvantage in ordinary social situations. In particular, she does not know how to act around teenage boys, whom she tends to intimidate. Her over-competitive nature surfaces during a Kuai ball game, where, despite its being a friendly game, she turns an opponent's slight lameness against her and overly crushes her, comparing the game to an act of war. She later admits to jealousy of Ty Lee's ability to attract potential sweethearts and is shown deliberately exploiting her companions' emotional weaknesses for no apparent purpose other than her own amusement. It later becomes apparent that her bullying and abusive treatment of people, even "friends" such as Mai and Ty Lee, stems not only from her cruel nature but a deep-rooted fear and inability to trust others. From a young age, she believed her mother favored Zuko and thought Azula monstrous. This shaped Azula's fears that she would be unable to rely on anyone for affection. Unable to trust others, she instead tries to dominate them through fear - a paranoia that ultimately drives her insane following the betrayal of her closest friends. Above all, she is obsessed with pleasing her father.

Abilities

Azula is a very difficult person to defeat in a single combat. Her excellent firebending abilities, hand-to-hand combat skills, intelligence, and quickness has made her a formidable opponent to the main characters in the show.

Azula is proficient in the difficult technique of using lightning, a pure form of Firebending. The only other known firebenders who are capable of lightning are Iroh and Ozai. Iroh, Aang and Zuko have been shown to redirect lightning by Iroh's technique, though Aang and Zuko have never been seen creating lightning. Even while breaking down into paranoia and insanity, Azula is still able to create lightning. The second most noticeable feature of Princess Azula's bending is her ability to create blue flames, a feat that not even the Avatar, Ozai, Zuko, or Iroh can perform. Azula has been seen using flames in previously unseen ways, such as jets of flames and whirling disks. Notably, Azula often firebends using only two fingers, rather than a closed fist or open hand. Azula can fight for long periods of time without tiring. This discipline seems to deteriorate with her sanity; in her final battle with Zuko, she strikes with careless attacks and giant, wasteful bursts of flame, explaining why she tires so quickly and easily in that fight. Her reckless unpredictability in that battle, however, makes her all the more dangerous, given that Sozin's comet was present at the time. She is also able to generate powerful shields of swirling flames, which she once used to withstand the simultaneous combined attacks of Aang, Zuko, Katara, and Toph. She is even able to charge up her fire before releasing it, as was seen during one fight with Aang. She is able to propel herself, using her flames, in a manner similar to a rocket. This ability has also been extended as a means to fly for short periods of time as seen in the Boiling Rock. Azula is also a skilled melee fighter; in the "The Avatar State", she easily blocked or parried all of Zuko's attacks without the use of Firebending, and in "The Eclipse", avoided the combined forces of Aang, Toph, and Sokka for several minutes without her bending to aid her. In "Appa's Lost Days", when Suki made a stab attack at Azula with her sword, Azula jumped horizontally and knocked Suki's sword out of her hand and onto a tree. Her ability to lie without altering her heart rate and breathing patterns may stem from her discipline, or from the detached aspect of her personality that allows her to inflict savage cruelty without any hint of hesitation or remorse. She is also an accomplished tactician, as she was able to conquer Ba Sing Se, a city thought to be impenetrable, while usurping the entire Government and hierarchy of the Earth Kingdom capital

Zuko is the exiled 16-year-old prince of the Fire Nation. Zuko is obsessed with capturing the Avatar in his quest to restore his honor and redeem himself in the eyes of his father, Fire Lord Ozai. His character matures throughout the show, influenced by his time as an exile, and he becomes less of an overbearing pompous prince and more of an emotional outcast, at times struggling with his feelings of pity and bonding with the same people his nation has terrorized. Zuko's maternal great-grandfather was the previous incarnation of the Avatar, Roku. Zuko often acts coldly, but has revealed himself to be a very caring character as well—a trait most often exhibited in the presence of his Uncle Iroh. Zuko's appearance is well-known due to the scar over his left eye, which he received during a forced Agni Kai with his own father. His regret, hate, and shame were influenced by the loss of his mother. In his father's eyes, Zuko's sister Azula was born lucky while Zuko was lucky to be born. Zuko is currently in a relationship with Mai.

Six years prior to the start of the series, Prince Ozai, Zuko's father, makes a bid for the throne over his elder brother Iroh, due to the latter's having recently lost both his only son and his campaign against the city of Ba Sing Se. Fire Lord Azulon, Iroh and Ozai's father, is furious that Ozai would try to cheat Iroh at such a low point in his life, and orders Ozai to kill his eldest son in order for him to realize the severity of his action. Ozai, considering Zuko a disappointment, was willing to kill Zuko to appease his father. However, in an effort to protect him, Ursa, Zuko's mother, does "terrible, treasonous things" that result in Azulon's death, Ozai's ascension to the throne, and her own banishment.

A few years after, Zuko protests a plan of attack that would have sacrificed many soldiers as bait, whereupon Ozai challenges his son to an Agni Kai for disrespecting him in his own war chamber. Unwilling to fight his father, Zuko begs forgiveness, only to be savagely burned across the left side of his face. Ozai banishes Zuko from the Fire Nation, ordering him not to return until he finds the Avatar, which was thought an impossible quest. When Aang emerges from suspended animation, however, Zuko begins the chase immediately. They encounter each other multiple times throughout the first season, each time Zuko failing to capture Aang. During Zuko's pursuit, another Fire Nation leader named Admiral Zhao also takes up chasing the Avatar. Zhao views Zuko as a failure and a traitor, and ultimately attempts to have him murdered. Zhao himself died when he refused to accept Zuko's help when he (Zhao) was seized by an Ocean Spirit.

The second season opens with Zuko and Iroh still chasing the Avatar, only to be confronted by Azula, Zuko's younger sister. They escape and realize they have been branded traitors to the Fire Nation. Now on the run from Azula, Iroh and Zuko travel the Earth Kingdom, seemingly aimless. Eventually Zuko splits away from Iroh, feeling he could no longer learn from his uncle. However, Iroh follows Zuko out of concern, and the two reconnect after Azula injures Iroh. Zuko begins his transformation, no longer driven by hunting the Avatar, and is allowed to begin to establish an identity free of pursuit. Their travels take them to Ba Sing Se, where Zuko follows his uncle's advice and tries to make a new life for himself. Both prosper; until when faced with the opportunity to return home, Zuko chose to side with his sister. After Aang is mortally wounded by Azula, Iroh fights off Azula, Zuko, and the Dai Li. After being betrayed by Zuko, Iroh looks on his nephew with shame. Almost immediately, Zuko begins to regret his actions.

The final season begins with Zuko and Azula's return to the Fire Nation after conquering Ba Sing Se. Both are praised as heroes through the Fire Nation for capturing Ba Sing Se and for killing the Avatar. However Zuko suspected Aang is still alive, which Azula comes to suspect as well. In order to protect herself in case the Avatar returns, she tells Ozai that Zuko killed the Avatar. Zuko soon begins to show more signs of regret for his past deeds, and is shown visiting Iroh in prison, often asking for advice. After many such visits, Zuko learns that he is a descendant on his mother's side of Roku, the previous Avatar, and therefore bears the task of restoring balance to the world. At a war meeting, he unintentionally helps Ozai invent a plan by which to burn the Earth Kingdom to ash. Catalyzed by this new shock, he decides to leave the Fire Nation and join Aang. He confronts his father, places himself firmly on the Avatar's side, and leaves, later to discover that Iroh has escaped from prison. Aang and company only gradually come to accept Zuko, but eventually befriend him. When Zuko's lack of resolve weakens his firebending power, he and Aang travel to discover the long-forgotten source of firebending, ultimately to learn it from their world's last two dragons. Later, Zuko helps Sokka free Suki and Sokka's father, Hakoda, from the Fire Nation's maximum security prison, the Boiling Rock. He also helped Katara attempt to find her mother's killer in order to make amends for his betrayal of her in Ba Sing Se.

During the finale, Aang disappears shortly before Sozin's Comet arrives and Zuko is put in charge of finding him. When Zuko is unable to find Aang, he instead finds Iroh, who immediately forgives him. Iroh then tells Zuko that he must face Azula for the crown and that Katara must assist. At the Fire Nation capital, Azula challenges Zuko to a single combat. During the duel, Zuko clearly has the advantage due to his remaining calm and Azula's deteriorating sanity. In a desperate attempt, Azula attempts to strike Katara down with lightning. Zuko jumps in front of the lightning, managing to redirect most of the energy, but is injured. Katara then defeats Azula and heals Zuko.

After the war, Zuko is crowned as the new Fire Lord. After his coronation, he visits Ozai in prison to learn his mother's whereabouts (the answer is not shown). He is later seen with the main characters at his uncle's tea shop, which marks his last appearance in the series

Appearance

Zuko is a teenager who matures, both mentally and physically, throughout the series. His appearance also changes over time. He is thought to be around 16 years old. His most prominent feature is a dark red scar over his left eye that extends over his ear. At the end of the series, he has a scar on his lower chest received from a lightning strike. His hair is black, and put up in a traditional Fire Nation hairstyle for royalty at the beginning of the series. However, as the series progresses and Zuko matures, he cuts his hair and it grows out and becomes somewhat long again, portraying a modern looking hair style. He has also changed his clothing to a more simple red and gold outfit.

Personality

While initially the series' primary antagonist, over time, Zuko has shown that he is a complex young man, motivated to restore his honor and dignity, and not an evil character; he eventually forsakes his past goals and becomes a hero. Zuko's sole motivation for many years was catching Aang, so he could return home with honor as his father had proclaimed, though as his quest continues he begins to doubt whether his father will ever welcome him home. However, his mistakes and struggles lead him to realize his destiny was to oppose his father and join the Avatar to help defeat the Fire Lord.

Zuko's bitterness and his personal circumstances make him believe himself victimized, though he also believes that his struggles have made him a wiser and stronger human being. He is frequently impatient and arrogant, though both qualities vanish after his change of alliance. However the episode "Zuko Alone", shows a softer side of him, and after his banishment his experiences with those less fortunate change his mind, making him a kinder and more tolerant person.

His past mistakes still haunt him, and perhaps due to this he is very intolerant of his own mistakes, expecting the best of himself and others and becoming extremely down when he does not meet his own expectations or when he feels he has jeopardized his honor (something he claims he thinks is the only thing he has left.) However, after he restores his honor by joining the Avatar he becomes a much mellower happy person, though he does claim in the Boiling Rock he is "never happy." His Uncle Iroh felt that Zuko was destined to restore the honor of the Fire Nation as its new Fire Lord, something Zuko took to mean his father would accept him back as crown prince, but he eventually he realizes his fathers true character and turns against him to help the Avatar, showing a desire for peace and for each nation to rule itself, putting him at odds with many members of the Fire Nation. Having earned the trust and friendship of Avatar Aang, Zuko is determined to help lead the Fire Nation and the world into an era of peace and kindness.

He is also shown as loving deeply and honestly (he is a very honest person in general, and as such is often oblivious to the duplicity of others) to certain individuals who earn his trust. These include Iroh, his mother, Li, and too a slightly less obvious extent, Aang, Katara, Toph, Sokka and Suki. He is deeply protective of those he loves, and though he rarely shows his feelings, is unusually good at helping and dealing with the issues and problems of others, making him the groups "agony aunt" as such when he is in a relaxed state of mind.

Firebending

Despite his youth, Zuko is highly skilled in both Firebending and dual broadswords. He is capable of holding his own against fighters and benders more experienced than himself due to his adaptability. Through determination, an ability to adapt, and strength, Zuko refuses to give up during a fight. He has also shown great agility and strength (pushing a grown man backwards with a slight push from his palm.)

Originally, though powerful, he relies on large brute force attacks that drain him and leave him open to counter-attacks. However, he is usually able to defeat opponents using his superior strength and agility to tire them out. Later, as he gets more confident and efficient due to training from his uncle, he is shown to use more refinement and economy of energy, out-thinking his opponent instead of out-shooting them. For example, in the Season 2 finale, he is proved even matched in a duel with Katara, who had long since been a waterbending master. This stalemate only ended when they switched opponents.

Although skilled, whenever Zuko faces his sister Azula in the earlier series, she proves to be the more skilled fighter. She has the ability to generate lightning, a skill very few firebenders are capable of learning. Zuko attempts to learn this skill from his Uncle Iroh, but is unable to generate lightning because of his own inner turmoil. However, Iroh does teach him how to redirect lightning, a technique he created from watching Waterbenders. However, Zuko cannot test this skill as Iroh refused to throw lightning at his nephew due to the immense risk involved. Zuko does successfully redirect lightning when his own father, Fire Lord Ozai, shoots lightning at him months later.

Zuko later grows from pupil to Master by joining Aang and teaching him how to firebend. Zuko initially has trouble doing so due to losing his drive and motivation (as for years, his sole motivation was hunting the Avatar). After he and Aang go on a quest to discover the true source of firebending, the two encounter the last two dragons in existence and learn that firebending is more about life than destruction and rage. Learning the secret of Firebending, Aang and Zuko both display incredible skill, though Zuko is more proficient with more experience.

When Zuko finally faced Azula again near the "Western Air Temple", the two are shown to be evenly matched. During the Agni Kai in the series finale, Zuko was able to hold his own during the entire duel, showing a mastery of offensive and defensive firebending, while Azula slipped deeper into madness and fatigue. Zuko gained the upper hand in the intense battle and taunted his sister to use her lightning so that he could redirect it. Azula charged up but at the last second, sent the lightning in Katara's direction. Zuko jumped in the way to save her and was barely able to redirect it, sustaining a large burn on his chest but surviving.

Other skills

Zuko has also shown to be highly skilled in the use of the double broadswords, a talent he refined during his time at sea. In "The Blue Spirit" and "Zuko Alone", Zuko succeeds against a number of Earthbending adversaries with nothing but his sword skill.

Zuko has demonstrated an ability in stealth on multiple occasions, in which he uses his alter-ego, the "Blue Spirit". He was able to infiltrate a Fire Nation fortress, the Northern Water Tribe's city and the Dai Li's base at Lake Laogai without detection. His proficiency at stealth was also utilized during the 3rd season episode, "The Southern Raiders", in which he and Katara snuck into and out of a Fire Nation command outpost, onto a Fire Nation ship, and then stalked and cornered the former commander of the Southern Raiders in his home village without revealing themselves.

Toph is a 12 year old blind Earthbending master. She is also known as the one and only child of the rich Bei Fong family whose symbol is a flying boar. Her parents are very protective of her, mainly because she is blind. But despite the handicap she is a very talented Earthbender. She kept it a secret from her family as well as her Earthbending teacher, Master Yu. She enters in a tournament called Earth Rumble, under the name of The Blind Bandit.

In search of an earthbending teacher who "waits and listens", the group arrives in the town of Gaoling and eventually come across the town's underground earthbending tournament, Earth Rumble VI. After watching Toph's performance and recalling the vision he experienced in the swamp, Aang believes she is the requisite person.When Xin Fu, the tournament host, calls for volunteer challengers, Aang takes up the offer for a chance to speak to her. Thanks to his airbending in conjunction with her inability to see what is not on the ground, Aang easily defeats Toph and upsets her winning streak. She, however, does not give him a chance to speak and immediately leaves the arena in a huff.

Aang later finds Toph at the Bei Fong estate, and he is eventually able to talk to her about his quest and need for an earthbending teacher. Before Toph can make a decision, she and Aang are kidnapped by the earthbending tournament staff, who believe that Toph lost intentionally because they failed to see anything hit her.

The tournament wrestlers demand a ransom, which Katara, Sokka, Master Yu, and Toph's father (voiced by Cam Clarke) pay, but only Toph is released. The competitors announce that they will be handing Aang to the Fire Nation for the reward instead, prompting Katara to plead Toph for her help in rescuing Aang. Her father interjects, claiming that his daughter is blind, tiny, helpless, and fragile, and unable to help them. Slighted, Toph steps forward and single-handedly defeats the entire tournament staff and the host, Xin Fu. Master Yu is speechless and awed by Toph's amazing earthbending skill. Her father is silent.

That night, Toph tries to reason with her parents that she is skillful at fighting and enjoys it, and that she should be allowed to live a normal life. She hopes that all of this new information does not change the way they feel about her. Toph's father replies that it does not change his love for her as a father, but it instead has made him realize that he has allowed her too much freedom. He plans to have guards watching over her all day long. Toph's protests are unheard.

Outside town, just as Aang and his friends are about to depart, Toph appears and claims that her father had changed his mind, saying that she was free to travel the world. Upon hearing this testimony, the group is swift to depart, sailing into the night sky with a new member and earthbending teacher. With his daughter's sudden absence, Toph's father concludes that the Avatar has kidnapped his daughter and issues a large reward to Master Yu and Xin Fu to bring her back by any means necessary.While traveling with the Avatar, Toph's social attitudes change considerably. She becomes much less snide and private, but nonetheless still retains her cocky attitude. Her bending abilities also improve throughout Book Two, as she has learned to bend metal using her special ability to "see" the impurities (small fragments of earth) in the metal.

Toph joins Sokka and Suki in the series finale to hijack a fire nation airship to attempt to prevent the "burning of the old world". While commandeering an airship she uses Metalbending almost as proficiently as Earthbending. The three succeed in stopping the airship brigade, giving Aang the time he needed to defeat Phoenix King Ozai and to save the world. Toph's last appearance is complimenting Sokka's poorly drawn painting of the group by saying "they all look perfect", again pointing out that she cannnot see it, and makes everyone laugh except Sokka. It is unknown whether she returned to her parents after the battle ended.

At this time, Aang and his friends discover Toph at the tournament when she wins, keeping her title of champion. Aang was looking for an Earthbending teacher, and while watching her performance he believes she is the one. Then, while the host is calling for volunteers to go against the new champion, Aang challenges Toph and easily beats her with his Airbending skills.

Toph then leaves the arena not giving Aang a chance to speak with her. Later on, Aang finds Toph at the Bei Fong estate and tells her about his adventure and his hopes of finding an Earthbending teacher. But before she can make a decision, both she and Aang are kidnapped by the tournament wrestlers.

The kidnappers demand a ransom from Katara, Sokka, Master Yu, and Toph's father. But they only release Toph, and announce that they will be taking Aang to the Fire Nation. Katara then begs Toph to help them save Aang. Her farther disagrees and claims that his daughter is small and helpless, and not able to help them. At this point, Toph then proves that she is no where near helpless as she steps forward and defeats the entire tournament stable by herself.

Master Yu is speechless when he sees Toph's amazing Earth skills, while her father stays silent. Later that night, Toph tries to reason with her parents and demands that she should be able to live like any other normal kid. And also, hopes they will not change their outlook on her. Toph's dad then says he does not change his love for her as a father, but has instead allowed her too much freedom. He then demands that the guards watch her all day long.

Then, just as Aang and the rest of the gang are about to depart, Toph appears and says that her father has allowed her to join the avatar on his journey. But, as we know, she is really running away from home, but Aang and his friends don't realize this and welcome Toph on their journey.

Toph's father, while realizing his daughter's absence, claims that the avatar and his friends have kidnapped his daughter. He states that he will give a large award to Master Yu and the tournament announcer Xin Fu to bring her back by any means necessary.

Toph can also Earthbend metal; she was the first to do so.

Toph was a blind girl that was born to rich parents. She was constantly restricted from doing anything at all, and she entered the fighting arena as "The Blind Bandit." Toph is one of the best Earth-benders, despite the fact that she is blind.

She met the Avatar, and after some cold-hearted arguments, she joined the Avatar on his journey and taught him Earth-Bending.

The Avatar first encountered Toph in a vision, who saw that Toph was his future Earth-bending teacher. However, Toph's parents, with the impression that the Avatar kidnapped their daughter, sent two men to try and capture her and the avatar.

As a tomboy, Toph brings a totally new personality to the group. Unlike the nurturing Katara, flighty Aang, or gruff but goofy Sokka, Toph is fiercely independent, sarcastic, direct, brutally frank, and confrontational; the choleric of the group. She appears to have the same carefree and adventurous personality as Aang, and she is very tomboyish in the way she acts and dresses - a contrast to the delicate doll her parents see her to be. However, unlike Aang, who avoids fighting whenever possible, Toph loves battling and takes great pride in her earthbending skills.

Despite being blind, Toph is arguably the most perceptive of a person's true character in the group, most likely due to her ability to perceive people's lies by their heart rate. When Zuko attempted to join the Avatar's group, for example, she was the only one who trusted his sincerity, while the others perceived it as deceit. While a good judge of character and often logical, she can sometimes let her fierce pride cloud her judgment of a situation or people she knows, especially when she believes she has been insulted. This makes her quick to anger at others, but she never fails to admit her own fault when she has calmed.

Toph's relationship with her parents is very conflicted: when Aang suggested that she should leave with them, Toph voiced reluctance of doing so. After she joined "Team Avatar", she claimed that she hated them. In "The Earth King", Toph receives a letter supposedly from her mother, saying that she seemed to understand her daughter. Toph is glad to go see her mother again, although it turns out to be a trap. In "The Runaway", she confesses to Sokka that one reason she relied on Katara was that Katara cared about her and added that this was more than her own mother ever did. Later, Toph dictated a concilatory letter to her parents, which Katara wrote and sent on Sokka's messenger hawk.

Toph is brutally honest when criticizing others. She is vocal about her opinions of others regardless of status or age.Her occasional spoiled attitude or aloofness may be related to her being the only child of one of the richest families in the Earth Kingdom. Thanks to her time as a competitor and champion of the earthbending tournaments, she is an expert in verbally taunting and insulting her opponents,and on occasion her friends, particularly Sokka.

Inside this hardened exterior, though, Toph hides trace insecurities in regards to her blindness. She has doubts about her appearance, being unable to see what she looks like. Being coddled by her parents all her life because of her disability, Toph hates being patronized. Her eagerness to prove her strength and independence has led to some initial difficulties with Aang and his friends. Toph insists that she can "carry her own weight" and often mistakes a simple friendly gesture for an act of pity for her blindness. Her encounter with Iroh, however, has taught her that Aang, Katara, and Sokka care for her because they are friends, not because her disability makes them feel obligated to do so.

One of Toph's most obvious traits involves her very poor personal hygiene. She has been seen belching loudly (to the point that when a group of playwrights was gathering information about the Avatar and his companions, many believe she "saw" through echolocation), picking her nose, or spitting, and is usually covered in dirt or, as she calls it, "a healthy coating of earth". Despite her uncouth habits, Toph is in fact well-educated in the manners and bearings of high society, though she chooses to ignore them.

Name

Toph is the only character within the series to express a surname, "Bei Fong". In "The Serpent Pass," Toph's passport reads as 土國頭等護照北方拓芙 (tǔ guó tóu děng hù zhào běi fāng tuò fú) which translate as 'Earth Kingdom First Class Passport: Bei Fong Toph'. Here, her name means 'supported lotus', which matches her parents' view of their daughter as a flower in need of protection. In "Tales of Ba Sing Se", her name was written as 托夫 (Tuō Fū), which means "entrusted man". In "The Earth King," on the document from home, her name is reverted back to 拓芙. Her last name Bei Fong ( 北方 ) is the Mandarin pronunciation for the word "North". The word 托 (Tuō) also means 'to support in one's palm' and the word used for child care and is usually a prefix to another Fù ( 付 ) that means "pay".

Earthbending

While the Earthbending style used by most Earthbenders is rooted in the Hung Gar style of Kung Fu, Toph's style is uniquely based on Chu Gar Southern Praying Mantis Kung Fu. Though blind, Toph has the unique ability to use Earthbending to "feel" even the most minute vibrations in the earth, be it the presence of trees and buildings or the march of ants several meters away. Through this heightened seismic sense, she can visualize where people are, their relative distance to her, and their physical build. This sense provides her with a distinct advantage when facing other Earthbenders in combat, as they characteristically require contact with the ground and extract rocks from their surroundings. As another result of her blindness, Toph has acquired an acute sense of hearing, enabling her to recognize people by the sound of their voices and home in on distant conversations.Most significantly, Toph retains the ability to sense when a person is lying based on his or her heartbeat and breathing patterns.

Unfortunately, due to her dependency on vibrations in the earth, Toph is left considerably vulnerable to attacks initiated in midair or opponents who require little constant contact with the ground, such as Airbenders.Terrain that impairs Toph's ability to sense vibrations also hinders her abilities. She has some difficulty with sand, which constantly shifts and lacks solidity, disallowing her to accurately "feel" her surroundings, describing the vibrations as "fuzzy". As further illustrations of her affinity with the earth, Toph does not know how to swim and expresses an aversion to flyingas well as travelling underwater in a submarine.

As of the end of Book Two, Toph is the only known Earthbender with the ability to bend metal. When Toph is seen concentrating in her iron prison, the sadhu known as Guru Pathik explains to Aang in a parallel scene that metal is refined Earth. As a result of her ability to feel the vibrations in earth, Toph is able to locate the impurities (the small fragments of earth) and manipulate them to "bend" the metal portion.Later on, Sokka gives Toph a small piece of meteorite, which she can easily mold into myriad shapes (one of which appeared similar to the Nickelodeon logo and subsequently transforms it into an arm bracelet she now wears).She has said to have learned Earthbending from the original earthbenders, the badgermoles, when she ran away to a cave and came upon them. Through learning earthbending not as a martial art, but as an interaction with the world, she was able to learn how to effectively "see".

Toph is undeniably the most skilled Earthbender in the world at the end of the series, being one of only two humans known to use the Badgermoles' Earthsight ability. In addition, Toph invented Metalbending and studies Sandbending, which is implied to be difficult. She is shown to be rather proficient in it at the end of the series, making incredibly detailed sand sculptures of an entire city (including people) once.

Sokka (Jack DeSena) is a 15-year-old warrior of the Southern Water Tribe who, with his sister Katara, accompanies Aang on his quest to defeat the Fire Lord. Sokka describes himself as "meat-loving" and "sarcastic." Unlike his companions, Sokka cannot bend an element. However, the series frequently grants him opportunities to demonstrate his true gift: ingenuity. He takes great pride in his mental and physical strength, though it is often overshadowed by others' ability to bend. He is extremely clever, relying on science where the mystical and martial arts elude him, though his silly and immature manner often causes others to underestimate his intellect. Instead of mastering an element he is given a chance at mastering a sword, which he does in his own cunning way. His common weapon is a boomerang, and he recently forged his own sword using the metal from a meteorite.

Sokka grew up in his village as an aspiring warrior-in-training of the Southern Water Tribe. Forced to mature quickly when his mother Kya was killed in a Fire Nation raid, he cultivated his warrior skills with a militant zeal, while his sister Katara did chores and practiced waterbending.When Sokka was thirteen, his father and the other village men left to fight alongside the Earth Kingdom in the war against the Fire Nation, leaving him and his sister to look after their tribe with their grandmother, Gran Gran.As the oldest male left in the South Pole, Sokka came to assume a semi-leadership role by the time he was fifteen, fiercely protecting the village from any possible outside threats while trying to train children to be a new generation of defenders.

While on a spearfishing expedition, Katara and Sokka discovered Aang in suspended animation inside an iceberg. After Katara freed him, Sokka initially believed that the Airbender might be a Fire Navy spy, and he eventually grew xenophobic enough to banish him from the village. Upon discovering that Aang was the Avatar, destined to master all four elements and bring peace to the world, Sokka relented, realizing that they had a common enemy in the Fire Nation. He then set off with Katara and Aang on their journey to find a waterbending instructor at the North Pole, determined to hone his warrior skills by way of fighting Firebenders along the way.

In "Sokka's Master," Sokka expresses self-doubt and worry that he is not contributing as much to the group as his bender companions are. Inspired by his friends' encouragement, he seeks out a master from whom he could learn the art of the sword. Rather than fighting with brute force and flawless technique, Sokka's creativity and heterodox approach to things are the cornerstones of his technique, and his master notes that in time Sokka will be a superior swordsman. As he departs, his master gives him a game piece that is later used as a sign of connection to the secret society known as the Order of the White Lotus.

In the two-hour series finale, Sokka and Katara meet with Katara's Waterbending master, Pakku, who has now married their grandmother. In the battle against Ozai, Sokka, his girlfriend Suki, and Toph hijack a Fire Nation airship and use it to destroy others of its kind while Aang duels with the Phoenix King (Firelord Ozai). Sokka and Toph are separated from Suki and attack another airship, but Sokka breaks his leg and strains his arm grabbing hold of Toph, who was falling off the ship. In a compromised position, the pair are attacked by two soldiers, whom Sokka defeats at the cost of his sword and boomerang. As he and Toph are on the edge of the crashing ship, Suki arrives with another airship and saves the two. With the battle over, the trio reunite with Aang and the vanquished Phoenix King. At Zuko's coronation, Suki is reunited with her fellow Kyoshi Warriors, Sokka and Katara are reunited with their father, with the rest of the group reunited with their friends. In the end, Sokka is seen at Iroh's tea shop in Ba Sing Se where everyone teases a painted picture he created of the entire team, wherein he altered some factual details to make the scene more "memorable".

Personality

Skeptical, abrasive, and sharp-witted, Sokka is detached from Aang, Katara, and Toph's pursuit of the bending arts. Not gifted with bending abilities himself, Sokka instead prefers the ways of the warrior and the scientist, and he takes his responsibility as protector very seriously.He is also very intelligent and good at inventing ideas and plans on the spot, even if these ideas are not always effective.

Patriotic and long to hold a grudge, he strongly wants to exact vengeance for the Fire Nation's decimation of the Water Tribe and the death of his mother. He holds little interest in the mysticism surrounding bending and prefers to solve problems using his strength and his wits.He tends to be rash, however, and his pride often leads to embarrassment. Despite his obvious cleverness, Sokka sometimes appears foolish. His sarcastic and absurd behavior can sometimes extend into important decisions.

A passionate carnivore, Sokka has demonstrated his love of meat on multiple occasions and is the chief hunter of the group. Sokka also has an affinity for sarcasm. In the episode "Bitter Work," Sokka shouts vowing to give up both meat and sarcasm for assistance, agreeing to consider himself no longer "Sokka, the meat and sarcasm guy," but willing to be "Sokka the veggies and straight-talk fellow." By the end of the episode, however, he has given up neither meat nor sarcasm.

Under the guidance of swordsmaster Piandao, Sokka displays various unorthodox procedures when undergoing his training. As he presents Sokka with his blade, Piandao relates that though his skills were hardly impressive, he displayed much creativity, versatility, and intelligence.

After the failure of the Invasion, Sokka proves to have a sense of honor. Feeling strongly disappointed, given that the invasion was his idea and probably his fault for the invasion force being captured. Sokka was willing to restore his honor by risking his life in order to rescue his father from a highly secure Fire Nation prison.

Sokka writes with his right hand, but draws with his left hand.He is possibly ambidextrous, as he is often seen wielding his club, sword, and boomerang with both hands, although his left-handed art is crude and rudimentary.

Innovations and abilities

For an inhabitant of a mystical world, Sokka shows a remarkable proclivity towards science and is something of a jack-of-all-trades. He seems naturally adept at creating weapons out of any materials at any time. He learned how to construct amateur explosives from his father, which he once used to simulate Firebending. In another instance, Sokka used trickery and optical illusions to help his sister Katara fake the ability of Earthbending. Working side by side with fellow technologist, the Mechanist, Sokka has managed to engineer a system of control for an experimental hot air balloon as well as conceptualize the design for waterbending-powered submarines. Sokka also demonstrated advanced math skills and a talent for geometry towards the end of the series. He is also able to navigate the landscape by just looking at the map. Alongside his trademark boomerang, Sokka is proficient in a variety of weapons, including clubs, a machete, spears, and the newest addition, a black jian molded from a meteorite that is capable of cutting through solid metal, called a "space sword". Sokka's ultimate achievement is destroying the entire Fire Nation Air Force along with Suki and Toph.

In addition to his engineering skill, Sokka has shown a remarkable talent for poetry. In The Tales of Ba Sing Se, he stumbles into a poetry reading and holds his own when competing with the instructor in a haiku contest. However, his hubris gets the best of him and he is thrown out for accidentally adding an extra syllable to the end of a haiku.

As the only non-bender in Aang's group, Sokka is often overshadowed by the bending skills of his friends.However, it is usually Sokka who comes up with a plan for victory. His skill in Martial Arts noticeably improves as the series progresses, though earlier in the series it was usually his persistence rather than skill that often allowed him to fight against more extensively trained opponents, such as Zuko in "The Avatar Returns" and Ty Lee in "The Chase."

Sokka has come to learn the art of swordsmanship in order to improve his contribution to the team. Under the tutelage of the Fire Nation swordmaster Piandao, Sokka undergoes various activities, including sparring matches with the butler Fat to hone his sword wielding skills as well as arts such as painting, calligraphy and rock gardening to sharpen to his mind. Eventually, when instructed to make his own sword, he uses fragments of a meteorite that fell the night before to collect the metal needed to forge his blade. Sokka's sword, like his master's, is patterned on a Chinese jian, but unique in that due to the properties of the alien material used for its creation, the blade retains an unusual all-black appearance. The sword is also able to slice through the toughest materials, including regular metal (as seen when Sokka slices through a Fire Nation cannon during the Day of Black Sun). Although Sokka proves unable to defeat his master in heated battle and must leave to continue his training on his own, Piandao states the belief that Sokka retains traits which one day could very well come to make him an even greater swordsman than himself. This is proven as the series progresses; during the invasion Sokka used his sword skills to defeat multiple Fire Nation soldiers and in The Boiling Rock Sokka and Zuko teamed up to fight Azula, a highly skilled firebender, to a stalemate with Zuko defending against her fire blasts and Sokka keeping her back with his sword. In the series finale, his fighting abilities culminate in a scene that finds Sokka using a combination of his speed, agility, and deft motion to disable two Firebenders of the Royal Guard, while wounded and dangling from a falling Fire Nation airship, though he sacrifices the sword in the process.

Sokka was also given a white lotus Pai Sho piece by his master, an important symbol to the secret White Lotus Society. Members of the society are known for appreciating philosophy, being masters of bending and warrior disciplines, and for disregarding traditional rivalries and hatreds held between the nations.

Beginning in the third season, Sokka also on occasion assumes the persona of Wang Fire, an upperclass Fire Nation citizen. First done to pass as Aang's father, he subsequently dons an oversize beard for comic relief as in "Nightmares and Daydreams", pulling scams in "The Runaway", and used it to enlist in the Fire Nation army in Avatar comics.

Katara (Mae Whitman) is 14 years old, and the sole remaining Waterbender of the Southern Water Tribe. Katara, along with her brother, Sokka, discovers Aang at the beginning of the series. She and Sokka accompany him on his quest to defeat the Fire Lord and bring peace to the war-torn nations. Katara is mature, loving, and responsible. Always looking out for the well-being of others, she is an apt leader when the situation calls for one. However, she can be overbearing at times, and believes without exception that her way is the right way, never relenting on her views even when they are disproved. Despite Katara's kind nature, she has a temper which, when combined with her impressive waterbending skills and idealistic views, can be quite destructive. After the passing of their mother at the hands of the Fire Nation, Katara took on a motherly role over Sokka, a nature that she later took to in relation to Aang and Toph. As well as waterbending, Katara learns how to use Bloodbending in Book 3, although vows never to use it.

Katara grew up as the mature, motherly figure of her family and tribe. When Katara was eight years old, her mother gave her life for her daughter's during a Fire Nation raid in order to protect her identity as the only Waterbender in the tribe. Katara managed to locate her mother's killer, but was unable to kill him when she thought him unworthy of her revenge.

Though her interests lay in developing her waterbending skills, she resigns herself to cooking and cleaning duties while her brother, Sokka, trains to become a warrior. Later, Katara’s father Hakoda and the other tribesmen journey to the Earth Kingdom to participate in the war effort against the Fire Nation. This leaves her, alongside her brother and grandmother, Kanna ("Gran Gran"), to look after the tribe.

The events of Avatar: The Last Airbender begin two years following this, during a spearfishing expedition, when Katara and Sokka find Aang in suspended animation inside an iceberg. Katara frees him and comes to discover that Aang is the Avatar. With a common goal of mastering waterbending, Katara, along with her brother, joins Aang in the journey to the Northern Water Tribe to find a waterbending master to teach them. Upon arrival, Master Pakku refuses her apprenticeship, because she is female. However, after noticing an engagement gift he gave to Katara's grandmother half a century ago, he agrees to teach her. Katara advances so quickly in her art during their stay in the Northern Water Tribe that Pakku formally deems her capable enough to be Aang's waterbending teacher.

The second season opens with Katara leaving the North Pole and receiving water from its Spirit Oasis. Katara then journeys with Aang to the Earth Kingdom for him to learn earthbending. While at an Earth Kingdom stronghold, General Fong places Katara’s life in danger in an attempt to get Aang to enter the Avatar State. After Toph joins the group to teach Aang, Katara and Toph often quarrel until their differences are settled. While in Ba Sing Se, Katara is thrown into a prison with Zuko, a sometime antagonist. Initially hostile, she speaks to him and begins to believe he has changed for the better. She then offers to heal his scar. Before that can happen, Aang and Iroh show up to save the two. During the following battle, Aang is distracted by an image of Katara and cannot ascend into the Avatar state properly, and is mortally wounded. After Aang is hurt Katara confronts Azula in a fierce battle and actually manages to push Azula back, until Zuko intervenes. She then attempts to take both Azula and Zuko as opponents by herself. They eventually overwhelm her, but she manages to save Aang and escape. At the end of Season Two, Katara uses the water from the Spirit Oasis to attempt to heal Aang.

While on the ship that the group obtains to reach the Fire Nation in the third season, they are attacked by another Fire Nation ship that discovered their false identity, Katara aids in their escape. While in a village burdened by the Fire Nation's pollution, Katara surreptitiously disguises herself as the river spirit known as the Painted Lady in order to help the village. While staying with an old woman the group meets in the woods, they find that she is a Waterbender of the Southern Tribe. Later, she offers to teach Katara the technique of "bloodbending", which enables the user to control the movements of animals. When Katara refuses to learn this technique, Hama bloodbends Aang and Sokka, forcing Katara to use the power herself to save her friends. In "The Western Air Temple", when Zuko offers to join Team Avatar, it is Katara who makes the first move to attack him and send him off. At the end of the episode Katara makes a threat to Zuko that if he so much as thinks to hurt Aang, she will end Zuko's life. Zuko does not gain Katara's trust until "The Southern Raiders", in which Zuko helps Katara find the man who killed her and Sokka's mother, Kya. She sets out with the intent to kill him, but ultimately withholds.

During the Sozin's Comet two-hour premiere, Katara goes with Zuko to stop Azula from becoming Fire Lord. When Azula and Zuko clash, Azula attempts to blast Katara with lightning. Zuko, however, jumps in the way, and is badly wounded, forcing Katara to fight. Having captured Azula, she heals Zuko and they wait for the outcome of Aang's battle with Phoenix King Ozai. When the war ends, she is seen in Ba Sing Se, living a peaceful life. The story ends with Katara kissing Aang.

Waterbending

Katara's abilities have greatly improved since the very first episode. At the outset, she had little control over her waterbending and often needed someone else to help her defeat an opponent, though her temper, which would increase her waterbending tenfold, would often get in the way by causing unnecessary destruction. As time went on, thanks to practicing diligently, studying a waterbending scroll, and then studying under Master Pakku, her waterbending rapidly improved, to the point that she was considered a Waterbending Master.

Katara can use water to cut through objects, can summon lashing waves and whips of varying sizes, cover herself with a sheath of water and manipulate it at will, surf on a surfboard made out of ice, melt and control existing ice, forming it into various shapes, and can freeze water and objects surrounded by water with little effort, create giant walls of mist and steam, transform steam into ice instantly, or evaporate large amounts of water. She has even used the water from her own sweat to break herself out of a wooden jail-cell. She has learned from Hama to use and take the water from the moisture in the air, in plants, and underground within the Earth. She also has learned from Hama to manipulate people and animals using the water within their bodies through a rare and sinister form of waterbending called "Bloodbending", which can only be used during a full moon. She has used bloodbending against Hama to stop her from harming Aang and Sokka, albeit reluctantly, and again on an individual who she had thought had killed her mother without remorse.

Katara has proven herself a very powerful Waterbender, most notably during her duel with Hama in single combat, bloodbend effectively first time around and hold her own against Sokka, an upcoming swordsman, and Aang, the Avatar, when Hama was manipulating their bodies against their will. She also has shown to be nearly as skilled as Aang even though he can bend more elements. She was able to defeat Zuko, and even turn the tides on Zuko's sister Azula and then later in the series defeat her by chaining her to a grate. In the midst of their battle, Master Pakku was so impressed that he, grudgingly, had to admit that she is a powerful waterbender in her own right and later deemed her a master Waterbender under his study.

Katara is one of the few waterbenders born with the Waterbending sub-talent to heal using water as a catalyst, manifesting itself when she was burned by Aang when he first attempted Firebending. Her ability to heal has only proven to get better under the tutelage of the Northern Water Tribe's Head Healer, Yugota. She has used it to relieve sickness, temporarily undo brainwashing, heal seemingly mortal wounds such as burns and bleeding injuries, and even the almost dead with the help of the magical water from the Spirit Oasis. Her healing powers have limits, as she cannot cure all sicknesses, completely undo brain damage, or heal internal injuries and birth defects.

Characteristics

Being another protagonist of the show, Katara also receives a lot of attention from reviewers. She is described as "Smart, capable; almost a generic anime heroine". In addition to these features, she also is "kind, brave, and passionate."

Katara is also very nurturing, acting as den mother for the group. She usually cooks their meals and washes their clothes. She takes responsibility for her brother, Sokka, and later Toph, and especially Aang, and in one episode, saved the group by leading them out of the desert. Her maternal instincts, while with good intentions, can sometimes make her bossy.

In addition to that she is very stubborn, often butting heads with the abrasive, independent and often hygenically challenged Toph. She feels that she should help everybody, and as a result she was hurt by a boy named Jet.

Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen) is the fun-loving, 12-year-old protagonist of the series (technically he is 112 years old, due to his being frozen in ice and sustained in the Avatar State for 100 years). He is the current incarnation of the Avatar, the spirit of the planet manifested in human form. As the Avatar, Aang must master all four elements to bring peace to the world and restore the balance between the four Nations. Aang loves to travel the world and is always eager to learn new things. At times he is somewhat naïve of the world and others' true feelings, as he is often too preoccupied with the events immediately surrounding him to notice what occurs on a more in-depth level.

Aang is the main hero of the show. He's an air nomad (or an air bender), meaning he can control the air. Aang is nice, sweet, and funny. Preferring to play and make friends to fighting, he'd rather just be normal then have to save the world. His two pets are a flying bison, Appa, and his flying lemur, Momo.

One hundred years prior to the series, Aang lived with the southern air nomads. When he learned of his destiny to be the Avatar and that he would be taken from his guardian monk, Gyatso, he felt confused and hurt and didn't want to be the Avatar. So, he took Appa and ran away, but unfortunately, he chose to run away in a bad storm. During the storm, Aang and Appa nearly drowned, if it weren't for Aang's hidden Avatar powers that froze them. He and Appa were frozen for 100 years, and during that time his home and his favorite monk, Gyattso were wiped out, and many people thought that the Avatar cycle was broken.

One hundred years later, Katara, a young water bender, and her brother, Sokka, found him in the South Pole and freed him from his icy prison. From then on, Sokka and Katara join Aang on his quest as the avatar. Along the way, they discover much history of the war between the 4 nations, and their main enemy is Prince Zuko, an exiled prince of the Fire Nation.

It doesn't take Aang long to develop a crush on Katara and he tries many ways to impress her, although sometimes she just doesn't seem to notice his attempts. Eventually, his feelings become more than just a crush....

Aang remains bald for the first two seasons, but in season three he grows out his hair to disguise his appearance, and this is when we see that it is brown.

Aang is a 12 year-old fun loving Avatar in training. He likes to stir-up trouble especially when it comes to messing with the Fire Nation. He secretly has a crush on Katara. Aang is a 12 year-old Air Nomad who is the last airbender. He never wanted to be the Avatar, he just wanted to grow up as a regular kid. He was technically supposed to have been told of his identity as the Avatar when he turned 16, but the monks of the Southern Air Temple feared war was upon them. A conflict between the monks resulted in Aang being transferred to the Eastern Air Temple to complete his training. Because of this, Aang ran away along with his flying bison Appa, but was caught up in a bad storm. He encased himself and his flying bison in a giant iceberg for a hundred years.

One hundred years later, he was found by Sokka and Katara. They then became fast friends. Aang feels guilty for what happened to the world as it changed and suffered. He is being hunted down by Prince Zuko and the fire nation. His duty as the avatar is to master the 4 elements and confront Fire Lord Ozai. While around his detours at the Southern Air Temple, he discovers he is the last airbender and that Monk Gyatso along with the other airbenders died.

When Aang's life is threatened, he is able to tap into his Avatar state, giving him seriously amplified powers. Aang tends to collapse after coming out of his avatar state, as it takes a lot of energy, which leaves him wide-open for attacks. But luckily, his friends are at his side to help him.

Aang loves animals and has a flying bison named Aapa, and a winged-lemur named Momo. Along with his friends Sokka and Katara whom he takes on detours around the world. But just because his mission is to save the world, doesn't mean he can't have fun too, right. Right?

Aang was just like any other twelve year old Air Bender living in the Southern Air temple with his guardian Gyatso. Then the elders told him who he was: the next Avatar. It was then that Aang's life took a very drastic turn; the other kids felt that since he was the Avatar he was too skilled to allow them a fair try in games.

The elders would make him train for long hours for when he would have to help save the world. His guardian Gyatso was not happy about this and said that was Aang needed was to be allowed to be a normal boy. Feeling that emotional ties were slowing the training down the elders landed one last final blow on Aang's already saddened mind: to take him away from Gyatso for the remainder of his training.

Seeing no other way out Aang took his flying bison Appa and left the temple during a heavy thunder storm. While flying he and Appa fell into the raging sea; panicked Aang froze the water around him and Appa. He remained in this frozen state for a hundred years before Sokka and Katara came and found him.

Now Aang, with the help of his new friends Sokka and Katara, along with Appa and Momo the lemur, must learn all of the bending skills he can while mastering all of the bending styles: Water, Earth, and Fire, along with learning whatever was left of his air bending training.

In the last episode of first season, he merged with the ocean spirit to save the moon one. When he is a spirit, his eyes and the airbender tatoo on his forehead glows white.

Aang is the last surviving member of a once great race of people known as Airbenders, who had the power to control the air currents around them and use them as they willed. But Aang is no ordinary airbender. Aang is the legendary Avatar, the only person able to bend all four elements (Air, Water, Earth and Fire) and the only one who can stop the Fire Nation from taking over the world.

Aang once resided in the Southern Air Temple, where he lived the normal live of a 12-year-old, more or less. This all changed when Aang was brought before the monks and told what they had known since he was a child. Word quickly spread that Aang was the avatar, and he suddenly found himself isolated from all of his friends, leaving him to play board games with his master, Monk Gyatso. Eventually, the monks decided that Aang and Gyatso would have to be separated because Gyatso was too overprotective. Aang, overhearing this conversation, decided to run away. However, when caught in a terrible storm, Aang and his flying bison crashed into the sea. Aang's avatar state was triggered, and he created a pocket of air around himself which froze into an iceberg, where Aang would remain for 100 years, unable to assist his people as they were attacked by the Fire Nation.

Aang was freed by Katara and Sokka 100 years later and awoke into a world ravaged by war. He is now on a quest to master the four elements to defeat Fire Lord Ozai.

It my be Aang's responsibility to save the world, but he is still a child, and as such, is playful and sometimes immature. However, he will do anything to protect his friends and when the situation is dire, he is a formidable opponent. He also has a big crush on Katara.

Aang is an Airbender. One hundred and twelve years ago, when Aang was a baby, he chose four special toys out of thousands. Those four toys were the ones that the previous Avatar chose, so as soon as Aang chose those toys the elderly monks knew he was the next airbender. (By the way, Aang is from the southern air temple, and Airbenders are monks).

One day when Aang was twelve, Aang overheard one of the elderly monks say that they were planning on taking Aang to the Northern Air Temple to separate him from Monk Gyatso, because they said he was "too attached to the boy". After hearing this, Aang left on Appa, his flying bison. While flying away a terrible storm came and Aang and Appa got caught in the middle of it. The pressure pushed them into the ocean. They would've died if Aang didn't freeze them. They were frozen for one hundred years until Katara and her older brother Sokka found them. Now all four (soon five, when at the Southern Air Temple they find a lemur they call Momo) of them travel together to help Aang learn firebending, waterbending, and earthbending to save the world from the firebenders that are gaining power to take over the world.

Oh yeah! I almost forgot to tell you that the Avatar has to master every bending type, water, earth, fire, and air. The avatar is the same person with different personalities, bending type, and sometimes gender. In other words, the Avatar has been reincarnated after the Avatar dies, but not right away. Also the Avatar is reborn in a different nation other than the one it was once in, it goes in some order. The four nations are Fire, Water, Earth, and Air, and are all in different parts of the world. You'll find out about all of this in "Book One Water" of the TV show. It has 20 chapters (or television episodes, whatever way you want to call it).
